Letter Formation Apps:

Hi Guys,
I'm working on letter formation with one of my students.  I thought I would download three apps. and see how the student got on with them.
These are the 3 apps:

1. abc:

2.  ABC Tracing:

3.  Little Writer:

Has anyone tried any of these.  Have you tried any other letter formation apps?
I'll let you know how I get on with these three but in the meantime please let me know if you have any other info on apps. for letter formation.

Thanks.

  1. Hi Debs,

My students have tried the second one on your list ("ABC Tracing") - the free version is just ok - it doesn't grab the students' attention, the students just trace over the letters and there is a static picture on each page of an item that starts with that letter. No feedback is given to the student on how well they traced, and there's not much in the way of sound effects.

You might want to try "ABC Phonics" - although this too is not a letter formation programme - which is what you're after - it does give students practice at tracing over letters (or words) and there are also sound effects of animals that start with each letter, which makes it a bit more interesting. The students touch the picture to make the sound. There's no feedback on how well they traced each letter though; however I think I've seen programmes that do that ... maybe in my neighbouring class? If I come across any, I'll let you know.

    1. Hi Glenda,
Thanks for this. I've had a go on each of the letter formation apps mentioned - the 'little writer' gives feedback - but not sure if the students is going to like it. Not sure about the graphics. I'll let you know.
I'll check out ABC Phonics too.
      Cheers - Debs

  2. Hi All,
I agree with you Glenda ABC Tracing - not brilliant. My student engaged with it but as far as letter formation goes I don't think it will help. It doesn't give any guidance as to how the letters should actually be formed. As long as all the required dots in the letter are covered thats fine - in fact even if you do not cover all the dots that seems to be fine too - so not a great app for letter formation .
My student also had a quick go with Little Writer - he got quite frustrated as he does tend to rush and go outside of the 'line' which is required and therefore gets sent to the start of the letter agin. However with a bit more practice this may improve - we'll just have to see.
So I'm sticking with abc and Little Writer and canning ABC Tracing for now . I'll give my student a few more goes with each and let you know how we get on.

  3. My favourite so far is 'abc' - I think it actually helps with the letter formation.
Little Writer - a bit confusing with the graphics.
I think my student and I will stick with 'abc' but I will keep my eye out for anything else.
